Default Speedometer Question Please Help

I just got a 1997 F150 Extended cab 4wd and the speedometer goes to 40mph and stops as soon as I start driving. The trip odometer works as well as the main odometer. Can this be fixed or do I need to replace the whole cluster? Thanks for any help.

I have the same problem, with the same truck. My speedometer sticks at 37/38 mph. From time to time, it'll drop to zero, then climb back up to 37/38. Any assitstance is greatly appreciated.

Unhappy Erratic Speedometer and odometer

I have a 97 F150 S/Cab LWB. 365,000 miles. All equipment works including cruise. But when driving my speedometer reads exactly double what my actual speed is. It has been tested using GPS and another vehicle pacing me. All sensors have been replaced, OSS, VSS and rear axle sensor. New cluster installed. All guages work. PCM was reflasshed and replaced still reads exactly double. Dealer is as confused as myself.
Any idea's appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. We finally figured out that the 4R70W trans was the culprit. Bad clutches let a shaft turn faster than normal. It created a stray signal to the pcm. Replaced trans with Ford warranty unit. Everything works as designed. Truck now has over 400,000 miles and doing fine.
