Default speedometer and odometer doesn’t work and trip

I own a 1998 Ford F150 with a 4.2L engine. The speedometer, odometer, and trip counter are not functioning. My suspicion is that the gear responsible for the odometer might be broken. I'm planning to order a replacement for that to resolve the issue. However, regarding the speedometer, my research suggests it might not have a gear connected to it. Can you confirm this? Additionally, could replacing the odometer gear potentially fix the speedometer too? I'm encountering error code P0500 for speed sensor A. Even after replacing the speed sensor, the problem persists. I'm contemplating replacing the cluster with one from a junkyard, but the available ones have mileage well over 200,000. I’ve checked all the wiring everything seems to be connected correctly. Please help with some advice. Thank you.

I had this issue in mine for a while. Hitting bumps, rattling, etc. would cause the dash lights to flash and do a sweep test. Sometimes everything would function except for the odo. Eventually the cluster totally died, and the car would not start because the PATS system is in the instrument cluster. Bad soldering is common to these trucks (i bet your compass/thermometer display don't work either. i fixed mine a while back, a transistor leg snapped off the PCB but it died again after a few months), but I never had the P0500 issue. Are you sure it's related? Anyways, after the no-start I had to pull the cluster and touched up every bit of solder I could see, and it started working again. Replacing the cluster with a junkyard one is a huge pain, I would not recommend it. Ford will likely have to re-flash it for your car, especially if you want an accurate odometer reading. If you've got 2 or 3 hours I'd try to reflow that solder and see what it gets you.
