Default Spare Keys...

(Yes I searched first)

I got my truck with only one key and a broken remote. I ordered a new remote and have found online instructions as to how to program it. No problem. Now- for the keys. I have heard thru a couple buddies of mine that if I don't have the valet key for the truck, I need to have all new keys made for the truck at a cost of over $200. What gives? Is this the experience of anyone else or have others done what I was hoping to do? That is, getting two new keys and just programming them to the truck to add to the one I already have.

I know this is from another site but the info is still very good. You only have one key so you will need another PATS key made by the dealer but after that you can do your own.

They are pretty expensive. If you don't have 2, you can't program any others. It's for antitheft, which is great, but the cost is high. I live in an area that I'm not worried about theft, so I took the ring around the lock cylinder, had more regular keys cut, wire tied my coded key inside the the ring area of from the lock cylinder, and mounted it below the steering column. Now I use the regular noncoded type key to run it.

Yes you have to have it done at the dealership and it should be a little over $100. remotes you can do yourself.

You can buy a second PATS key blank yourself and have it cut but it must be programmed at the dealership. or buy 2 blanks and program the third yourself

I went to Ace Hardware to get my spare, took in the original. Ace has a computer that will program the new key. 2001 F150, 75 bucks works great.
