Default So, how does the 4.6 like to be driven?

Just signed up after picking up our '02 4.6/ 5spd a few days ago. I'm coming from a '95 Ranger with a 2.3/ 5spd, so I have literally twice the motor I'm used to. What I'm wondering is, where does the 4.6L like to run? The 4-banger was happiest up in the rev range, & to keep any power I tried to stay up around 3k. My "other car" is a Moto Guzzi motorcycle, & they're known for being revvy - 70 mph in 5th is about 4 grand - so I'm used to hearing the motor run. My "new" V8 seems to be comfortable around 2500 rpm's , but I'm just wondering if that's where I should be running it.

Thanks in advance for any advice - looking forward to learning as I go...

Randy

i've got a 4.6 and it likes to be driven hard sometimes and nicely others i find because the engine is a bit smaller than a 5.4. it goes through fuel a bit faster.

i get about 100 km per quarter so about 400-450 a tank depending how i drive it

but its also on original plugs as far as i know. so it may get more once i change plugs

IMHO- just drive it normally- there is no need to rev it like a racecar before you shift gears
As you drive it you will find the “sweet spots” for the tasks at hand( highway, back road, pulling a trailer, etc...)

Just a side bar- my Dad owned a Moto Guzzi 850 Eldorado with a 1000cc kit in it back in the mid70’s
Full on touring bike- custom paint,- beautiful bike!- it ended up in Michigan somewhere.
(few folks around here have even heard of a moto guzzi).

Jbrew - yep - 5 speed. Years ago I had an F150 with the 300-6 cyl & 5 speed & it didn't mind lugging a bit, but the Ranger was much happier higher in the rev range. We've also had lots of VW's & had to keep the rev's up on them, too, to keep them alive. Just thought I'd see if the 4.6 seemed to have any preference.

rcairbear - thanks for the tips. We've got an '86 California 1000 for touring & just picked up a '77 850 T3 to build as a town/ commuter bike. Was just at a Guzzi rally this weekend & there were a couple Eldo's, still going strong. Hard to kill the old V twin if you treat 'em right - if you lug 'em like a Harley they won't survive....

Thanks again-
Randy
