Default Shifting problems

I did a search and sorry if this is a repeat thread I looked and didn't see one with the same problem I'm having.
It's a 02 Intended cab, 4.2L with 134xxx. I'm the 3rd owner, and only known issue is a IAC that's been going out for months I just haven't gotten around to replacing. The real problems is wbent driving if im easing up in speed it shifts 1st and 2nd just fine and 3rd there's a slight thud/jerk but my RPMs don't surge. When I'm really laying into it, like coming on a on ramp, 1st and 2nd are good smooth and then it'll hang out and my RPMs will just keep climbing until it finally had a big clunk and jerk into 3rd at around 65-70MPH. Once it and it's a smooth shift from 3rd into OD, but if I have to slow down at all, it's a hard shift back into 3rd out of OD. Is this something I can change fluid and filter in and fix? If it sounds like the Tranny is on its way out I'm probably selling the truck, the 2 quotes I have for rebuilds or swaps is more than I paid for the truck. $1400 for the truck and around $600 in front end rebuild and tune ups (plug, wires, TPS cam shaft sync and sensor)
If anyone has any input at all let me know if it's worth fixing, or selling it, and getting my 95 F150 back up and running

IMHO do a total flush if you can. New fluid, filter and add some Lube-Gard to it. My tranny on my '97 had 139xxx when it was rebuilt. Had that stuff added.
It'll add more lubricity to the ATF & can very well smooth out the shifting. Then sell it.....

If you are having problems with it shifting, a flush is not a good idea. Fluid change, yes. But a flush will increase the pressure higher than your transmission is used to, and can cause more harm than good. You also don't want to change all of the fluid, especially in your case where you are having issues. Believe it or not, your trans is using the dirty fluid to its benefit. Just drop the pan, change the filter, and add 4 or 5 quarts, and call it good.

My friend owns a trans shop, and I can tell you a lot of "it was shifting ok, then I got the fluid flush done" stories.
