Exclamation shift selector moved out of correct spot

02 Automatic trans. When my starter failed with no warning, we turned the key and moved the shifter into N . Then back into P. after that I noticed the orange line is now one spot lower than the gear I need. Example, drive is now just left of 2. Park rest between p and R.
I'm hoping it's not stretched inside the colum. I looked under the truck, ontop the neutral safety switch, there is a plastic piece riding what look like two rails. Q: can / could I adjust my problem out with this piece?
It's been a few months since I last looked under there. I'm trying to describe it best I remembered it.
Note: when I shift, it's still firm. Not sloppy. Just need to fix.
Thanks for any help. I'll be back on this site in a few days if not tommarow.

Look up under dash just above steering column where shift arm comes out, look for a red string, there is a black adjuster u turn to adjust the needle. Mine did same.

I had this problem and for me it was actually the linkage where it connects to the top of the tranny. No tools were required really. It was adjustable kind of odd plastic clips. I cleaned it up and set it to the right spot. Problem solved.

I am having a similar problem with my 97 XLT I recently bought it used was told the Guage cluster had been replaced due to the odometer not working and the Shift indicator is permanently over past 1, my question is was it just out of position when the guage cluster was replaced and reinstalling the guage cluster with it in the correct position will fix the problem? any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for all the input. If my carport isn't too wet this weekend, I'll try your suggestions. Then post results.

I had this same problem not 2 days ago. The white housing that holds on a black plastic gear looking piece is how you can adjust it. Sorry for the lack of proper terms! Hah, the picture is from the floor looking straight up. Just like someone on here said too, if you can turn that wheel it'll adjust the gear indicating needle on the dash. I hope this helps out, good luck.

Thanks for the help. I just (Finally) Bought a full repair book for the truck. Looked through it the other day, it said the same. Lol, I need a 8lb weight.
Still haven't fixed it. Really, I'm going to try to find time this weekend to fix it. Last Sunday, fighting the setting sun, I changed the front brakes and speed control sensor "brake pressure switch". Easy job. Saved my rotors by a ****-hair.
