The is according to the manual for my 2003, might be different for 1997. You can shift into 4WD high while traveling below 50MPH, for 4WD low come to a complete stop, put the truck in neutral. Move the switch, put it back in drive and continue on your way.

Personally I prefer to pull off to the side of the road, and handle all 4x4 switching. Since basically what is happening is your vehicle's transfer case is locking the two driveshafts together to allow the front differential to begin receiving power, I see issues with changing it while driving. This is just my personal two cents on the matter, but I'm sure whatever is recommended in the manual should be safe for the transfer case... ha that rhymed somewhat.

be sure to let off the gasy while shifting on the fly... ...if you kick the 4wd in while you are stuck... flip it to 4wd..then be really easy intill you feel the front end in... **do not flip it to 4wd and then get on it hard**
