Default service engine light does not work

Bought a 2001 f150 with a 4.2 that had a beeping noise but no light. Pulled the codes and got an egr and lean bank 1. Replaced the egr because I couldn't get it clean enough to not leak. The new one did not fix the problem. Got the Diff pressure switch which fixed the problem/cleared the codes. I still get the tones when I first start it after 5 or 10 seconds and then about an hour later. I found some info that says if it is 5 beeps it is a problem with the restraint system. I will work on the beeps later. Right now I am trying to find out why my service engine light doesn 't light. I have pulled the speedometer cluster but there is no bulb where the light would light. Is this hard wired into the board? I really don't want to totally dissassemble my cluster if I don't have to. The light does not come on when the key is turned on(when all the other lights come on to check to see if they are working), and it wasn't on when I had trouble codes and after clearing and verifying that they were cleared, still no light. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this???
Thanks,
Tom

i have an opposite kind of problem with mine. i have a 2001 as well and theres problems with the oil and service engine lights from what i hear. for instance, my oil light will sometimes constantly stay on when the oil is fine and sometimes it wont come on at all. recently tho my service engine light has decided to permanently stay on. i had it checked and theres nothing wrong with it except the fact that the light have a mind of their own and choose to turn them selves on at their will. so maybe its just the fact that ford didn't do a good job on their 2001 f-150 models?
hope this helps!

There is no bulb there likely because the previous owner that sold the truck to you removed the light to get rid of the Check Engine Light so he could sell it to some unsuspecting buyer who didn't know to check and make sure the CEL came on when he put the key in.

Sounds like you got taken sorry to say. Always check to make sure the Check Engine Light, Air Bag Lights, ABS (if equipped) etc all light up like they are supposed to when you put the key in and turn it on. If something doesn't light up there is a problem.

Apparently I wasn't clear enough for you- there is no empty socket or a bulb-I have since removed the rear panel from the instrament cluster and pulled the circuit board away from main housing. There is what looks like a micro led soldered on the board-looking at the housing there was a piece of black electrical tape covering the lens. Removed the tape, put everything back together and the light is functioning fine now and since I fixed the fault, it is not lit when the vehicle is running.

I did not get "taken". I knew there were problems when I purchased it and got a great discount because of it. I have been fixing cars for over 40 years but have never come across micro lights soldered on the instrument panel. They are probably doing this to keep people from removing the bulbs-I guess the new work around is just tape over the lens. Usually you can look and find the empty socket where the PO had removed the bulb.

I think I found the source of the warning chime. The owners manual states that 5 chimes indicates a problem with the srs. Searching the forums indicated the most commom problem is a burnt bulb in the switch to turn off the passenger air bag. Pulled mine apart and the bulb has 2 broken filaments. Going to the electronics store tomorrow to see about a bulb(it is soldered directly on the board and is not socketed). I will post if this fixes it-pretty sure this is the problem.

Tried a bulb from the electronics store. It didn't work. Went to the junk yard and picked up an assembly and pulled the circuit board and mounted it in my keyed housing. Assembled everything.....no more chime. This fixed the problem....$5 from the junkyard and about 15 minutes to change out. Beats the heck out of letting the dealer troubleshoot it for $90 hour.

Default Emissons mix up

i Have a 2003 ford f150 4.6l v8 and last week i took it to get the emissons test. the guy who gave it the test plugged the it in before i turn my truck off and it jacked up my light on dash. so my check engine light did not come on so i failed. today i change my oil and my light came on before i started it. it fixed its self. that guy at emissons he mess my truck up then failed me him! o well can't kill a ford.
