Wink rusting shackles on rear leaf springs BROKE, common issue?

last fall my shackle on the drivers rear, behind the tire rusted through and broke while towing our jetski's to the shop, and put a huge pushed up spot in the bed, almost coming through the floor. well, sure enough I am hauling firewood today and the same thing happens to the opposite side! fml. has this happened to anyone else?

ive heard of it happening, but never seen it. Other than the dents, should be a pretty easy fix. I'd just go through and replace all of them. And maybe coat them with some paint or rubberized undercoating to keep them from rusting through again.

It sucks, of course it had to rust through 5 days before I leave for college too. fml. the suspension shop keeps them in stock, which should tell you how often they get replaced. hopefully they are a different design that doesn't trap mud as much, compared to the stockers

Ford has changed the shackles... they're coated now... before they were bare... I just bought two and replaced one for now. I'll do the other when it's needed

Yeah it was pretty common. While I was at Terrys Ford in Peotone, I had to work on two in one day, one with the passenger side rotten, and one who wanted both. These trucks looked well taken care of, but high in the mileage department. Not to bad to do, but yeah it happens. I think in 2002 or 3 they had a TSB out on them. It was either for that or the leaf spring itself, I cant remember at the moment. Mine on my 2002 has started to look a little gnarly, too.
