Rough Running 4.2
Hello, I signed up after reading way too many threads to help with my new truck. I bought an 01 with the 4.2 for $1 from the horse farm that my sister-in-law works for. They were going to retire it because it needed "$4,000" in repairs. It ran like crap and after reading about it I decided that the isolator bolts had to be the major culprit. It was revving, jerking, bucking, you name it. Followed some really good instructions and knocked it out in about 12 beers. Then I had a temp gauge that would bury itself on hot 5 minutes after driving. I put in a new sensor and for my year 01 there is only one. The guys at Advanced swore there were two and sold me two of the wrong ones. Ordered the correct one online and it went in easily. That didn't cure the problem. I read a posting that it may be caused by a bad battery...who would have guessed that? I replaced the alternator already because the maintenance guy told me it was on the list. I tried to get this so called $4,000 list, but he said it was a verbal estimate. Any way as I was saying had the battery tested bad. Since then no overheats and I've been driving it like mad. It's my first pick-up, so I've been hauling all sorts of crap to the house and from the house. I have $500 in parts in it including all new brakes, rotors, and e-brake. Got to love PA inspections... Also had to pick up some tires. Got some on CL like new for $200. I'm in this thing for under a $1,000. Like i said it's an 01 XL 4.2 4x4 with 181,000 miles. It looks like it's been through a war, but no rust. Supposedly it was the night watchman's truck, so who knows what went down in it. Thanks for all the help.
