Replacing transmission - worth it?
Hi all,
Right now, the tranny on my ol' '97 is slipping off an on when I'm driving, but otherwise the truck runs well. I live alone, so I use this truck mostly for a backup ride and for the transport of home "improvement" supplies and yard sale runs.
My question is two fold: With it's dismal mpg, is it worth it to spend the money on a "rebuilt" tranny or should I save my money and let this thing run 'till it "don't-go-no-more?"
Also, I live in Vegas and wonder if anyone knows the "cost" of an installed rebuilt tranny with overdrive? An if they have a tranny places they'd recommend... just encase.
Thanks, T

It all depends on what the truck is worth to you. If it is worth more to you than the cost of a new transmission then fix it. If not do not. If you feel like a new truck is in your future maybe a patch for now is best.
One thing I would try is to get the transmission fluid changed. I use to have a car that on occasion the tranny would start to slip. I would change the fluid and be set for another six months. I sold the car so I do not know how much longer it lasted. I would think something like this was just putting off the transmission problem.

This last weekend in changed out my transmission and transfer case in my 97 with a 5.4 and i got them both for $ 650 from a junkyard and put them in in about 10 hours the local shop wanted $2500 so i saved some real cash minus the exhaust in the way it wasn't too bad
If your ride is nearly cherry, as is my 97XLT, then putting a buck or two into a replacement tranny may be worth it. Here's a place to start:http://lvguaranteedauto.com/Transmission.html
A Google search turned up a good number of tranny shops in the Vegas area.
