Default Rebuilt 4.2/Vin ID

I have a rebuilt 4.2 that came with my truck. Although the old man who previously owned this thing didn't make mention of it there are many obvious signs it's a "new" motor. What I'm trying to suss out is if there is where there is a probable place on the motor that I can find a VIN#. Any ideas?

Have they ever? 70s ford trucks don't and there aren't really "numbers matching" ford mustangs because ford never tied specific engines to vehicles. Best you can do is verify that the engine in there matches the build sheet. And then you can find date codes to see if they are close enough to seem original.

OP unless you have paperwork or can find a manufactures stamp on the block that leads to a build date either way later or earlier than your truck was built you won't find "proof" that this engine is a donor.

Edit* also to be that guy, VIN# is redundant because the "N" in VIN stands for number. Just an FYI

lol.

Would there be any place in particular on the block to start the search you'd recommend?

I believe around where the starter bolts to the block. But don't quote me on that. There's a few other users who are more well versed on the 4.2 hopefully they drop in and they May be able to point you in a more specific direction on the location(s). But I'd start with around the starter. If you don't already next time you drive buy a parts store stop in and buy an inspection mirror for like $1. It will help you see in the hard to reach areas.

Check by the passenger side engine mount. No vin, but it should be tagged.

What obvious signs?

Unless work was poor, it should look just like original.

All remans will have heat tabs . Not so if its a junkyard motor.
