Default rear end clunk

clunks when u go from park to reverse or forward to reverse. u joints good. fluids good. greased slip yoke. checked everything i can think of. if i jack it up an hold the drive shaft still i can move the wheel back and forth more than i should be able to. im assuming it has to be in the rear end. this is the second rear end with the same problem. when i put it in the slop from the pinion shaft all the way to the hub was minimal. much better that the old one. certainly not as much as with leverage from the wheel. also looking at the pinion and ring gear there is very little play. but still a clunk. any help would be appreciated.

Axle end-play would be the best explanation....unless something is loose in the suspension.
Grab the rear bumper and shove the rear end from side-to-side and see if that produces the clunk you are getting.
All axle assemblies with semi-floating C-clip-retained axles have a built-in clunk.

Mine did the same thing. Got a buddy over and pulled the diff off and 75% of the bolts were loose and falling out. So we pulled them, put some lock tight on it, and put the bolts back in and slid it back in. The noise then was gone.

Mine makes a loud clunk going from D to R, but otherwise is perfect. Was your rear end new the last time you replaced it, or used? I've heard many people ask the same question, so I think it's pretty common, and not a problem. It doesn't bother me at all. If I throw it in reverse while rolling slightly forward, it doesn't do it. So that's what i do every time.

it was a used diff. but i will go ahead and check those bolts as well. when u stop somewhere and put it in park it will roll back probably close to a ft before it stops. doesn't seem right. but im gonna investigate further.

i took the diff cover off and had someone shift back and forth. when doing so i could see the pinion gear grip good against the ring gear when put in forward. when put in reverse it turned maybe a lil less than an 1/8 of a turn and then hooked up good against the ring gear. providing the clunk at this time. aslo checked bolts. all tight.
