This is a pic AFTER the install, but it is very important to mark BOTH ends of the shaft, before you start, as I and II because you can reverse the shaft, and knock the balance off.
I originally put Precision joints in it, but they were junk. You can see the quality difference between the two. The Precision cap (right) leaves a lot to be desired in weather protection.
The Preceision (right) is meek by comparison. Neapco's a WONDERFUL.
I replaced my ujoint with moog probably 11/2 years ago. The past 6 months I have the clunck when going from park to reverse. I pulled my driveshaft and joints seem to be ok. What could cause the,clunk noise?
Could be a couple things. Trans mount, backlash in the differential, and even slop in the trans. Some of these clunks are cleared up by putting a thin coat of PTFE grease on the INSIDE of input yoke.
Does it do it on level ground too? Sometimes the parking pawl (AKA the rooster) can be worn and mimic some clunks into the driveline, but that usually only becomes apparent on hills.
This is the entire parking pawl assembly. I'd look at everything else before this, but just wanted to show you the possibility. The rooster can be it, and so can the piece that causes the trans to lock into park... I've seen that piece wear out too. (see pic below)

Trans mount is new. I put a thin layer of PTFE grease when I changed the u-joints. It's always on level ground, seems to do it worse in the morning. Will not always clunk. Also I just replaced my rear-end with a junk yard unit, but also did it with other rear-end.

So that means you need to rebuild the differential? What axle do you have? You need a ring gear and the dif needs a bearing kit? Way beyond most all but the most capable guys I think.. I have a good 9.75 open dif I'd sell you cheap if thats what you have. Dont have a gear on it. If it were me I'd buy a new traction lock dif. I replaced the open dif (thats why I have it sitting in the garage) with a ford traction lock and I'm pretty sure it was under $500. If you really know your stuff you could rebuild the one you have for less then 500 probably. If you pay some one to do it it will go way over what you could buy a new one for. I was able to install the new traction lock myself. Hardest part is the shims. If you interested in the open dif I have send me a message.

Setting up a ring and pinion isn't something you do ***** nilly, or you'll be right back in there again. If you don't know what you are doing, spend the money and have someone do it for you.
To answer the rest of your question, it would be helpful to know what differential you have.... an 8.8, or a 9.75?
