Default Rear Diff replacement - Buying a used assembly

Hey guys,

Long time lurker, just registered.

I have an 01 Lariat SuperCrew 2x4 with a 9.75" 3.55, about 160K miles.

It's making an AWFUL howl/grind when i make right turns on a coast. In the throttle, it goes away. Overall, there is still some noise from the diff even when going straight.

I found a used rear end, brakes and all with 64K on it that can be shipped to me for a total of $880. It's the same diff with the same ID tag.

My question is, would it be any cheaper to have someone rebuild/repair the original rear end or would i be better off snagging this one?

Thanks!

It all depends on what is wrong with your rearend. I changed gear ratio, limited slip chunk and rebuild kit with all bearings and seals for less than $800. But I did the work myself.

Ya, i wish i were comfortable with doing that work. I will do just about anything but that.

What could be causing the noise ONLY on right hand turns? Clutch pack?
