Usually the EGR ports in the plenum connected to the throttle body are clogged....

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/throttlebodyclean.php

Also could be a bad DPFE sensor...or a sticking EGR valve.....

It was all three for me.... The Perfect Trifecta...

Do a search for P0401......

My truck is throwing the same code. I changed the egr and cleaned the thottle body and it still is throwing same code so I think its the DPFE sensor from what I got from doing a goggle search.

I just cleaned my egr valve today. I had replaced the DPFE sensor a few months ago and that didn't do anything. I took off the egr valve and did some tests on it. If you suck on that little nipple on the top, lol, the valve should be able to open up and move freely. Mine didn't move at all at first, it was stuck closed. I sprayed some carb cleaner, brushed it up, and forced that vale to open and close, then it worked like a charm. It opens about 1cm or so now. Stoked

This took about half an hour or so. And the p0401 code hasn't come back....yet
