Default Question about protecting the bed from rust

So my bed is rusting pretty bad...gonna replace it.

Before installing it what...if anything...can I/should I do to the underside to protect it from rust? I know I can't fully avoid it, but I'd like to keep it from rusting as long as I can.

Thoughts?

Bedliner the bottom before you install it or paint it with por15 or take it to zeibart and have them undercoat it.

Is por 15 ok to use on paint? I thought it was more meant for areas with some degree of surface rust

I haven't used it on paint but I believe they have a por primer to put on first, then the por.

I know it's nor Por-15 but can we get away with brushing away rust as best we can, hit with rusty metal primer, than cover in something like duplicolor rubber undercoat and be good?

You can slow it down that way. Unless you replace the rusty metal, rust will work its way back thru eventually. It's the rust pits that screw you over. Only blast will clean the pits well enough. Other than that, it's how good prep the metal first. Depending how far you want to go with it. Self Etching Primer before, is some of the best stuff. Whatever you use, make sure it's all compatible. Go talk w/Sherwin Williams. They know their shi and can aerosol can anything you want, - even ANY paint code marketed or used.

I called por15 their product is not intended to be used on painted surfaces. Only bare metal or rusty surfaces
