Problem with turn signal

When turning on either the right or left signal, both of the tail lights flash, like the emergency lights are on. What could be the problem?

Sounds like the two somehow got spliced together somewhere. The question of a towing harness is a good question. Maybe something with that is causing this. If not, I'd suggest tracking the wiring from the back.

Mine started doing that. Had to replace the turning signal switch.
