When the bearings go bad in the gear box they can sort of lock it up, by turning back the other way and then back again in the direction of the turn if they unlock it is a good indication you have bad bearings in it. Then they will lock again and release when you turn back the other way repeating the same condition. The damage usually comes due to a loose front end shaking for a few miles. The Bearings receive the shock from the slap of the loose tie rods and idlers. The answer is another gear box. Sometimes it also leaks some seepage. If your pump is bad it probably makes a lot of noise, sounding like it is gargeling a lot. If the pump is worn out it will cavitate and a lot of air bubbles will be seen when you open the fill level check. If you test the pressure and you got like 600 PSI you aren't gonna turn much. That takes fittings to tee into the port. Run it up hot and see if there are a lot of bubbles in the pump. They will stick around for a couple of minutes. Also when a pump cavitates badly it forces fluid out because of all the air bubbles.and you can't keep it full, always adding to it because it is low when you check the fluid level. If it is really cold where you are you might have too thick a hyd fluid in the pump. Some one might have put 15w50 in it.
