Possibilities
I have a 2001 f150 super crew .. 5.4 Triton... 3v... 4r100. 3:73 posi ... 2 wheel drive... It has 329xxx .... Now since I have bought it.. it has had a "whin/hum" sound .. I have replaced pinion bearing and seal . And my dif gasket.. which did quiet the noise significantly.. but when I put my driveshaft back In I noticed my front yoke had a good bit of play... Which I'm now unsure as to if it should have some or not... My next guess would have been the output shaft bearing .... If u joints looked okay.... My question is . Am I missing something?? Skipping over a step??.. are there any other possibilities to check??.. and if not... How much of a task is it to replace one... Any suggestions pointers ...much appreciated
1) What has play? The U-Joint or the yoke to trans interface?
2) Is the play longitudinal, axial, or radial?
The u-joint should have no "play" and if it has any it needs to be replaced.
Any play in the yoke to trans interface must be longitudinal. Any other play would mean either an excessively worn yoke or trans bushings / bearings.
