The job is not easy, but not impossible....somewhere in between. Plug #4 is very difficult to get at. Removing the electrical equipment attached to the firewall helps, but is not really necessary. Removing any equipment that eases access helps...depends on how far you want to go with it. Just take a good look at the installation and determine the best way to get access to each plug. You will need a 10mm plug socket with a rubber insert, various extensions and swivel joints, a can of Liquid Wrench, a can of Anti-Seize, a compressor/hose/nozzle to blow out the plug recesses, a tube of silicon dielectric grease for the plug boots, a torque wrench to read 15lb/ft and various other tools as required to get off the bits of equipment to get access....and a helluva lot of patience.

As TFARMS suggests, use Motorcraft plugs. The plugs for the 4.6L with EDIS-8 ignition (two dual coils and plug wires) require special plugs for #1-#4 to get long service life. (Plugs other than Motorcraft are OK as long as you get dual platinum models.)
