Could be PCV or a leaky exhaust manifold.

Passenger side valve cover. A hose is connected to it.

I would make sure the plugs are all tight first, just to be safe.

^ That. Feel around up in there where the sound is coming from while the motor is running, see if you feel any air pulsing. My ticking turned out to be a spit spark plug, very common on these motors.

Not the PCV as it's on the right side of the motor. BUT PCV valves can make many noises..the wrong type, -third party valves, since NO ONE makes the correct valve for these trucks other than Motorcraft. Third party valves can mimic a rod knock, - that one almost fooled me once lol. Sounded just like it.

Could be the PCV elbow in back of the engine as well. Or what anyone else has mentioned previously.

I would use the stethoscope to pinpoint and bare hand while the engine is running to determine origin. You'll want to do this ASAP, - if it's a plug, you don't have much time.

I would mention the pulleys as they can mimic the diesel and ticking sounds, but yea, those are at the front of the motor.

If you troubleshoot as mentioned, you'll find it...or get real close to it.
