Yeah i got the same problem now in my 2000 F150 4.6...except it wont switch into overdrive so it wont shift through all the gears..now im stuck cruising down the road at 3000rpms at 75mph. I know whats wrong with mine though, the overdrive actually shorted out on it and almost caught on fire so i pulled the fuse..until i find the wire that shorted out im not putting the fuse back in..

pull the steering column cover and youll see a small harness coming out of the shifter running down the column it will be either broken or a rub spot on it breaking the wire replace the shifter assy

Check to see that the wiring is not frayed inside the steering column, I just fix my Overdrive button found out the 2 of the 3 wires were severed/cut from rubbing on the column. Had to remove all the column covers to check it. Once you find out that it hass been cut then remove the drive shift that includes diconnecting the wiring from the connector which is under dash just follow the line, disconnect and repair or replace. I repaired it working just fine.
