Default outside air temp/compass problem

my outside air temperature and compass in the overhead display in my '03 fx4 has an interesting problem. It's become a ghost. Now you see it, now you don't!! When it does display, the temp and direction are accurate, but then it will randomly disappear. Also, the display doesn't always come on right away when starting the truck, sometimes i have to hit the button a few times before it comes on. And sometimes, it just doesn't work at all. Any ideas?? A quick search didn't really come up with much. Thanks

Not sure about the fading in and out, For the incorrect temp display, replace the ambient air temp sensor. located behind your grill on drivers side, lift the hood, remove the black plastic cover over your grill and radiator and there it is. I got my part at advance auto for $18.00
