Default Oil Pan question

Hey guys, my cousin called to ask me if I knew how to remove the oil pan on a 2002 to 2004 F150 4.2 V-6 with automatic transmission. He knew I was member of this forum and thanks to TheJMC and ken.norwich I recently fixed my fuel pump. He called to say, he can't remove the oil pan on his f150. The crossmember can't be removed and the only way he thinks the oil pan can be removed is by separating the transmission from the engine. I told him, there should be 4 bolts holding the crossmember to the frame. He told me the crossmember is welded to the trucks frame . I told him to remove the starter unbolt the crossmember and the oil pan should drop down. Am I mising something, he is my favorite cousin and I sure would like to help him out. The reason he wants to drop the oil pan is, because he wants to change out the bearings. I volunteered to go over and help him, but need some advice from you all . After all knowledge is power . Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to all replies on this matter . Godspeed WJ

According to the Ford manual, it should be able to come off with no problem if 4x2. If it's 4x4, the front axle has to be removed.
