Default Off the shelf transmission fluid

Can someone recommend a transmission fluid for the 4r100? I know the motor craft is recommended but I can't find it locally. How much will I need for a fluid & filter change

Mercon V

Brand doesnt matter. If its Mercon V it meets the specs

Probably about $6 /qt and $15 for a filter. If not draining torque converter, your refill will take 6.5 qt. $39 for fluid and $15 for filter, plus tax. Probably $60-65.

Amsoil, -you can get rid of that cooler then, well, if you want. I used 20 qts for the flush. I believe the E40D/4R100 calls for 16 quarts.

But yea, you can do it the cheap way as mentioned above. I'd keep the cooler though.

Yup, if it says Mercon V on the bottle, it is fine and meets Ford spec.
Walmart Supertech works for me.

But like insinuated above, if its been neglected....just a partial change with filter leaves a lot of old bad fluid in there.

Takes a lot more $ and fluid to replace then

Yeah... if it's not in good shape, just a pan change and filter is all I'd do. While you have it apart, you may want to consider using some filter clips. These things sometimes like to drop the filter down into the pan.... and that's not good. These are pretty cheap.... like 4 or 5 bucks through Transtar. Here's a link and some pics.

Good to know. I've heard WIX started reboxing/using Filtran filters for their trans filters. Can you tell me if yours said Filtran on the filter itself?
