Default Numerous Problems

Having an issue with a 2003 F150 with 4.6. 2WD.

The truck started running extremely rough on Saturday morning. It's always kind of had a tick tick tick tick clackity clack sound but it was really bad that morning. Wouldn't idle at the proper speed either. I could tell there was a serious problem so I limped it to the shop. About two miles from the shop the oil light started coming on intermittently and the gauge next to it (I'm assuming pressure) stopped reading intermittently (about every 100 feet). The CIL was not on nor flashing.

The shop pulled one of the spark plugs and hooked it to the code reader. They claimed that they could tell there was a problem deep within the motor. They claimed that it would cost so much to do more diagnosis that they were not comfortable doing it, that at this point the most economical route would be either rebuilding the motor -or- replacing the truck. They said a remanufactured motor could be installed for $8,500. A NEW motor, $11,000.

I asked them what it would be to try and fix the most likely things. They said it was most likely a bearing gone out and -IF- they replaced every related part and -IF- that fixed the problem, it'd still be extremely expensive (labor alone- $2000 compared to $2900 for a swap).

I was talking to a friend at lunch today and he said that he understood one of the modular motors had a problem with the oil pickup snapping off inside the oil pan, this could explain the loss of pressure and some of the problem. The motor could be toast anyway, as I've put +/- 50 miles on it like this... but what do you all think? Should I pay someone to pull the pan and take a look?

I'm in a really tough spot. I don't have money to throw around and don't really have the credit to get into a new vehicle. I'm extremely worried that I spend thousands replacing this truck with some other vehicle only to have that vehicle do the same thing.
