Default noob has a question about the engine reliability

Ok so since im new I hope you guys can help steer me in the right direction. Im looking currently at a 1998 4.6l 2v f150, 4x4 lariat. The truck seems mechanically sound but idk. the truck has currently 233000 miles on it. He used it as a work turck driving back and forth from tucson to phoenix everyday. kinda unlikely but idk? He works at the train yard in phoenix so im sure the truck has seen some abuse. He states only things done to the truck has been plugs, wires, thermostat, waterpump, brakes, tires, and batteries. Says everything else is stock. Truck has what sounds like some lifter noise, and a kinda squeaking sound under throttle. Truck has a k&N CAI along with a poweraid throttle body spacer. He says squeaking is from throttle body spacer. He wants 3500 for the truck. Do you guys think this would be a good idea to buy it? BTW interior leather on front two seats is shot so will need to be reupholstered.

edit: how reliable is the engine at this point? should I expect a rebuild in the next 10,000 miles?

thats too many miles, plus you hear a knocking coming out the engine, in my opinion I don't think its worth it, have you look anywhere else?

everyone around here who is selling their F150 is wanting a bunch of cash for it. I know its you get what you pay for, but a 1999 f150 4x4 with standard cloth interior and 135000 miles they still want 9000!!! the newer ones like 2004 and up cant find for less then 18k

I agree with FordAlex, that's too many miles; Just keep an eye out on craigslist and other personal ads, you'll eventually come across something. I had the same trouble finding a truck, until recently, when I bought a '99 F150 4x4 5.4L extended cab(115,000 miles) for only $4000.

Take your time, look for another truck. that many highway miles on a 4x4 thats a lot of wear, ask how long he's had the truck, if your were going to drive that far every day you'd be doing it in a 2wd car or truck, I smell a rat.

thanks for the heads up guys. I thought it was kinda fishy for him to do all that driving in a 4x4 truck. especially since he couldnt of been getting better then 17mpg. He says hes the original owner and that the Title is at the house in his name. Ill just keep looking.
