Default New head?

Hi All,
New to the forum.
I have a 2000 xl 5.4l extended cab lwb with about 124000 on the clock. I need to replace the valve seals so I took it to a mechanic who recommended a new head ($2k + $3k for labor). Or run it till it dies. I can't swing the 5 grand to replace the head (btw, the current one has had the spark plug insert job done).
My thoughts are; get the truck back and do the head swap myself to save the labor cost. I'm fairly good with tools, have a building to work in, own a lot of tools, have an 2 ton engine hoist, etc. I also have a secondary car so transportation is not an issue.
My question is, is this a job that can be tackled without a lot of specialty tools (can buy some if necessary), I've never pulled a head before what else might complicate the job? I've worked on my 72 Norton motorcycle and a long time ago on a 69 MGBGT. I can follow a manual, but I confess I'm a little nervous about this one.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, suggestions on videos, manuals, tools etc. as well.

Thanks,
Tony

My advice to you would be to search Youtube, particularly FTM's channel. See what is involved, and make sure it is something that you feel comfortable with tackling yourself. A lot of his videos involve the 3V motors, but they are pretty close to the same. Biggest difference is no cam phasers on the 2V motors - which is a big plus. The timing is something you really need to study and be sure you are comfortable with.

Here's a step-by-step in pictures, made to a video, which may prove helpful for you too =

Where are you located? I have some good PI heads and intake you can have if you're near.

I'm not sure about in the F-150, but seals can be done in the mustang without head removal. Takes a little bit of work but it can be done.

Doesn't matter. Same procedure. Just longer chains, but it's the same thing mostly. If you have a Romeo, there are some differences, but a Windsor should be pert near identical.

Another option given by the mechanic who quoted the replacement is to drop in a Jasper motor for about $8400 3yr -100k warranty.

Sorry but that's not close unless you're going to be around Detroit.

8400 is pretty steep. That's over 5000 dollars in labor. Go somewhere else and get a quote.
