I thought Hall effect had three wires? Of course. my picture might not represent what he has. Maybe it is three wire.

The info is out there somewhere. But the OP might not need it. Good to know though. Interesting problem.

Edit - the third wire might be in the center piece, inside the white wheel. The white wheel makes me think optical. LED-based.

Or, apparently, there's a "reed" type. I'd need to see the center piece... Learning new stuff.

One more thought: The VSS that you put in it.... was it brand new? If so, what is the part number? I am showing the VSS listed for E4OD and "Automatic Transmission", but nothing on the manual trans.

In fact, according to Dorman's site, they don't even make one for any 97 F150 but the E4OD trans'd trucks.

Damn... this has me stumped. I think you should either call Tasca Parts or a dealer and have your VIN handy. Lots of not-so-clear information on the interwebs.

What is the transmission code on the door sticker? Dorman doesn't list that number for a 97 f150. 96 f150 was the last year that used it.

Standard SC120 in this link differentiates between transmission and automatic transmission. Same part though. Several others just say "transmission".
