So i replaced the engine coolant temp sensor and the problem has fixed itself. My gauge has settled down and there is no overheating problem. I still have a little coolant in the oil and suspect that the head gasket may be faulty. Truck runs great with no misses. I am seeking out new advice for possible small water leak solutions that may fix my problem. I do see an engine replacement in my future because it seems to only be a bit more than having head gaskets replaced. I am in the Navy and do not have the means to do it mysef. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I hope this solves some of the other folks problems. It seems to be a popular issue.

I have 2003 F150 4.6 and have the same things happening. When I start it up in the morning no heat. Temp gets up to the normal spot. Still no heat when I get a few miles from the house the temp gauge will slowly move up into the red zone engine light comes on and after a few seconds the temp guage goes to the normal position again and then the heat starts to come out. This only does this when the truck is cold. Once the temp goes way up on temp and then back down it doesnt do it again. Any suggestions. I did replace the t-stat still the same thing. I do hear the gurguling behind the dash when the truck is turned off sometimes? Any suggestions. I also have a bike(bigdogbiker forum) and without these forums would be paying out big $$$$. Thanks for all suggestions and help.

Hey, I figured I would drop in and let everyone know that it's been a solid year and the problem hasn't come back.

So what was the final verdict? Was changing the entire coolant system the fix? I have solved the overheating problem but my temp gauge only registers half way up the gauge. I have driven it a little and nothing has gone wrong yet. The only problem is that I still smell antifreeze when the truck is running but have found no leaks. Let me know so I can fix this pain and finally drive it...

Same thing mine was doing and it turns out that is was leaking into my #1 cylinder and then overheating. Have a compression test done to see if its a head gasket.

my 98 f150 4.6l v8 is having some of the same issues . No heat temp spikes gurggling noise behind dash. no actual overheating or coolant loss. after a few seconds it will right it self. only seems to do this when truck sits for an extended amount of time. i have pressure tested the engine and changed TSTAT out a couple times. please help me out my mechanic feels its not the head gaskets since there is no coolant in oil or build up of pressure
