Default Tick or Knock

Well, hopefully, you don't actually need this any longer.

If it is a ticking noise that is rythmic and sounds like it is just about in time to your ignition (timing) system. Then it is one of your spark plugs "backing" out.

My 02 surper crew, blew a plug out as I umped on it getting on the interstate. stripped the threads out of the head.

This is a known issue with, at least, the 02 models according to the Ford dealership, and was fixed with inserts and different (longer thread area) plugs.

I could only hear it at lights/stop signs before mine blew. Most likely because that was the only time something was beside me to bounce the sound back without any wind noise.

Unfortunately I didn't know about the plug issue with the 02 (and others) F150, but there are multiple articles in this forum addressing the plug issue. I saw one the other day that listed the "improved" part numbers for the recommended plugs. Plus some tips on warming the engine before trying to remove the plugs. etc..

Hope all this helps and is actually your issue. If not, I hope you find it.

I have an 02 doing the same thing. Have you looked under the hood to try and figure out where yours is coming from? Mine is on the passenger side up high on the motor, checked the plugs and exhaust manifold and all are tight. I understand that the plugs and manifold bolts are known culprits on these so check those first. The plugs are hard to get to but with a little time and some tools it is not too bad.
Check those two areas first, Good luck!
