Default Need help diagnosing DRL issues

Hey guys!

I have a Canadian 1999 Expedition with the DRL setup. Same as on the Canadian F-150s.

Autolamps work fine, but the lower 8V low beam DRLs won't come on.
I checked the resistor and it was shot, so I tracked down the part and replaced it with a new one. Still no luck.

Were there any other weak points in the DRL system on these?
All the fuses are good, any ideas where to check next?

Would appreciate any help!

- Vincent

I know of the resistor tucked under the left headlight.

There is a relay block under the “surfboard” panel on the passenger side dash. Best of luck if you need one unless Ford Canada keeps a stash still.

Those relays also seem okay. They’re buttered in dielectric grease for some reason though.

Today I’m gonna follow the wires step by step using the shop manual. Probably a damaged wire somewhere along the harness unfortunately.

Use a meter and work your way back from the light. You say the relays seem ok. Is there power at the relay? how do you know the relay is ok?

Electrical is always the same story, start at one end of the system and work until you find the change.

Hey man!

Followed the shop manual and turns out one of the 4 relays was just stuck in one position.
Everything was getting power as it should, but when I actually manually tested all the relays I figured the one under the dash was just stuck closed (still did the clicking noise, which is why I dismissed it at first, didn’t check all the contacts).

I believe the previous owner didn’t know of the DRL function since the resistor was broken (first thing I tested). He went camping with his kids a lot so I’m guessing the auxiliary heater relay right next to the DRL relay gave up and he simply switched them.

Well, all works fine now. But I wish I was able to turn all lights off, DRLs are always on with the engine running haha. Just gotta pull Fuse #9 I guess.
