Default Need help deciding what to do

My son has a 2000 f150 with a 4.2 and it is wore out. I have three choices. I found a 01 f150 wrecked that I can swap motor and transmission in. it is a 5.4 4x4 ext cab short bed with 78000 miles. Or I thought that the long bed single cab and ext cab short bed have the same wheelbase. So could I just take the body off my sons truck and put it on the 01. Is that right or am I getting into to much work.
The other option would be a remanufactured motor. Does anyone have an opinion on this please help. My son just turned sixteen on friday and truck broke down sunday. I need to get it going asap.

How bad is the 4x4 wrecked ? Can you fix it withe the parts off your sons v6 truck? That's the route I'd go....

I know I would rather have the 4x4 ext cab 5.4 truck myself and I'm sure your son does to....but you have to do what you can afford.. The second option would be to put in the 5.4 and yank out that 6 banger...

Thats my thoughts exactly. I just need to know for sure if the two trucks are the same wheelbase for sure. If not then I will just swap motor and trans.
