It's really pretty simple. You get fans (I used 3.8 windstar fans), get a controller, and wire it up. If I did it again I would get a 2 speed single fan to fit the factory shroud better rather than the 2 single fans.

I know this is an old thread, so I apologize for reviving it, but I need opinions on my '01 S-Crew 5.4... Its literally killing my wallet.

I regularly drive a 2003 QQLB Dodge w/ an HO Cummins, but I blew it up (transfer case front half, DS, Front DS, and Trans output shaft broke on I-10 at 68 MPH). I have not driven my S-Crew in over two years, as it has been sitting, and not been in running condition, until two weeks ago, for 9 or so months.

I changed coils/plugs to Accel coils and Autolite's, changed out TPS, IAC, cleaned the throttle body ( with it off the truck ), induction system cleaning via Seafoam through vac line, burnt 20 gallons of premium gas and another bottle of Seafoam in the tank, and changed the air filter. The truck has a 2 1/2" dual system on it with single in/out Flowmasters. Also has 275/70/18 Toyo MT's on it.

Have I just forgotten how terrible the economy is on these motors due to not driving her, or is there something to blame? Mechanic thinks the cats are clogged up and says bank 2 sensor 2 o2 sensor is bad, I'm getting less than 7 mpg, unloaded, 5 mpg hauling my 7x12 SA enclosed trailer that weighs approx 3500 #'s.

Thanks in advance... I think...

No way in hell is it supposed to be that bad. Those autolights aren't doing you any favors and should be changed to MC platinums asap.

Does it feel low on power? Do you have a laser thermometer to check the temperature of the cats after the truck has warmed up?

Sorry to be the one to tell you, but those Accel and Autolite products are junk and do more harm than good for our trucks. You want to use Motorcraft SP-519 plugs I believe is the number, without antiseize and make sure you torque them to 28-32 foot lbs. The Motorcraft coils will cost you some decent money, but you will be changing those accels out very soon. It will cost less in the long run.

Flowmasters are not straight through mufflers and are proven to lose MPG and performance. Just something else to consider.

How does the truck run? Is the idle choppy at all? Less than 7mpg you are having issues. The reason I ask how the truck is running is because I would suspect a major vacuum leak.

With those 33" mud terrains I doubt you'll see more than 13-14 MPG when your truck is running correctly.

I've also heard over and over letting these trucks sit for extended periods of time is bad juju.

Hope this helps

Not in the least bit, which is weird, it actually seems to be doing better than the other 5.4 I own, but its an extended cab 2wd... I do not have a thermometer, but believe I can gain access to one relatively easily.

Truck runs fine, seemingly. I have traced down all vacuum lines, no cracks (unless they're too small to be visible) idles well, starts very well, drives like it has plenty of power... Just drinks the go go juice...

I understand milage will never be stellar with this truck, but I feel like it was much, much, much better than this before it sat up... ( I did not want it to sit up someone broke into it and stole all my tools and set the thing on fire, I had no choice but to buy a new truck and tools immediately, the Cummins made me almost forget about this 5.4, til I just broke her too. )

Without a tuner to read your air/fuel ratios it's pretty much a shot in the dark. If you do have a bad o2 it could be causing your truck to dump fuel into the engine. Do you have any codes?

I use the torque app and a Bluetooth dongle to keep up with mine. Maybe a 30 dollar investment.
