Mystery Noise...
#11
Oh great! I mean "great" that it's not a mystery. Would a bearing exhibit the same thing as I explained; when it was on the lift, spinning the tire by hand yielded no sound. e.g. it needs weight to create that sound? I was thinking that a rotor grinding against' the bracket wouldn't have such a deep tone to it. Would that be correct? Should you need a longer recording to better evaluate it, I can make it....(?) No 4x4 here.

I was thinking it was most likely a 2WD by the sound. It sounds to me like you have a pitted race. My old Ranger had the exact same sound.... the race was pitted. This is what happens when el cheapo bearings are used... like Valucraft. The PO of my Ranger used Valucraft bearings on it. This picture is old, but it's the only one I have. See the 2 pits?

Oooo, yeah I do see them. It's such a peculiar sound because it sounds almost like bum tires doesn't it? I thought that the mechanic was chasing down the wrong trail, although yes, it does look like my bracket has taken a grinding. The clearance was so tight (because obviously that metal was ground away), but I just had a feel THAT sound would've been more like a straight on grinding non-stop. This of course was that pulsing thing. Is there a particular brand that you recommend?

Cool, did he show you the old races? Were they pitted?

Yup! They were! They were black, too. Like they were burnt or something! Again, doesn't surprise me because the way that the previous owner was driving - with the two front tires leaning inwards I can't even imagine the abuse that those bearings were under for god-knows-how-long. I just want to underscore how much you helped. Thanks again!

Can any of you guys merge the accounts for Streetwiseguitar and Brazenkane? He's been trying to get it sorted out for a couple weeks now. THANKS!!
