Manual 5-Speed Shift ****
Before I take a monkey wrench to my present manual 5-speed shift **** (4.2L, 2001, 5-Speed, extended cab, XLT) I wanted to ask if anyone else had replaced their shift **** with new. I purchased a new old-stock Ford 5-speed manual shift **** for $17.00 - looks exactly like the present one. Best I can tell they are glued in place - no threads with a hollow plastic slip-on innershaft. So I am standing there with my monkey wrench ready to twist the present **** off and thought: "Ask! Make sure."

Here's what I put on mine. At first I thought a fancy one would be nice, but this one is comfortable to rest my hand on, and it don't get too hot in the summer, or cold in the winter. It fit right on the spline with no adapter required and I tightened it down securely using the side set screws. There is a slight problem in getting the bottom trim ring back around the set screws, and I need to file these down a bit or find a smaller length screw size. Walmart has it for $7.96 in stores and online.

Manual 5-Speed Shift ****
First, thanks for all the comments - they really helped!
I used a strap wrench and successfully twisted off the old shift ****. I then wiped down the plastic that was on the metal spline and pushed on the new ****. Tada!
Looks great. The old **** was worn smooth and the bottom portion had cracked. It was time for an upgrade.
Thanks again.
