Default Long/short block help

Anyone know how much it would cost for a 4.6 or a 5.4 long block.. Or a short block what would be the better way to go? Short or long block? I'm wondering because I'm looking at a truck and he says that the # 8 cyl has little to no compression and I'm not sure if it has the 4.6 or the 5.4..

I'm thinking the short block is the cheapest but is it the better way to go?

Depends how much work you want to put into it. If you can find a good used motor, it might be cheaper to swap in a totally different motor. You could go short block as long as they are both either non PI or PI, but then you have the work of swapping heads etc.

What's pi? And yeah I'm kinda new to the ford seen I. Been a ford guy all my life (im 17) and I'm running a jeep right now and looking for a pickup and well fords my deal! And yeah I'm willing to put the work in.. He says it has little to no compression on the #8 cylinder what could that be my dad said it could be quite a number of things..

PI is power improved heads. In 99 Ford upgrade the heads in the 4.6 and 5.4 to PI heads, making 97 and 98 heads called non PI. No compression can be a few things but hard to tell how much work is needed without opening it up.
My advice is unless you are getting it for very cheap, look for a truck with a good motor. There are many 99-03 F150s out there that are in decent condition.
