Question Need your thoughts-2001 F150 5.4 OEM Intake manifold replacement.

Aloha

I am new so please forgive me if I have not searched in the right place or have posted anything I am not allowed to, like the link below.

I have searched and read many articles about how the intake manifold fails at around 160k and mine did but I have not been able to find information regarding OEM Ford 2L1Z-9424-AA - MANIFOLD ASY - INLET replacement that is sold by the dealer on this site. The lower part of the intake manifold is open and exposed to Mother Nature. You can actually see the white filter(?) that is showing inside the bottom of the new intake. It is not like the original one nor like the Dorman aftermarket ones that are completely sealed or just one piece and I was wondering if anyone has installed one of these OEM replacements. The link below shows great pictures of what I am talking about. Just click on the picture and zoom in.

Why on earth would they leave the bottom of the intake open? Is there a reason? I can not think of any except for a nice new home for bugs, rats, moisture, ants, etc. . . .that's how big the opening is behind the coolant passage and the back is open as well, I can stick my fingers into the bottom of the intake. Am I missing something here? Sure would appreciate it if you experts out there gave me your two cents. I bought an OEM one from the dealer but the picture nor the description stated that the bottom of the intake would be open. I just stumbled across the one on ebay after I got mine and looked at the original on my truck as I have been waiting to remove it until I got all of the parts here. This is a deal breaker for me, what say you?

Yea, your missing something lol. That's just the insulater your seeing. It's not the lower intake. The lower is inside the insulater. Purpose of the insulator is to quiet induction noises when you get on the throttle. Dorman's don't come with one, so you use your existing. If and when there's anything left of it. They tend to fall apart after many years.

It's new to me, but that's all it is. They engines get real loud without an insulator. So it looks like a great kit. Ford improved the composite on that one so it's made better, shouldn't crack. They finally improve the manifolds on some 03's at the factory. A little late in the game, but they did improve them.

Mahalo JBrew,

I did not see it in the FSM breakdown of the engine diagram nor did it mention it when replacing the existing one. I paid extra for the Ford one because it has all of the correct brass inserts for all of the bolt holes and does not require new screws that are only secured by tapping the plastic of the Dorman intake. Not good for where I live in the jungle. A lot of Dirt and Lava Rock Roads that cause a lot of vibration.

I was going in circles as I have never owned a car with an insulator on the bottom of the intake, but then again, I haven't replaced an intake on a car for about 20 years now and that car was a 1960's model year. I miss the old days of points, one coil, plug wires, a crappy radio and manual windows. I am an old timer and all of these new gadgets are just distracting. What ever happened to just driving the car and enjoying the ride? Now they want them to drive you around. I miss the 60's era, great muscle cars and you could do whatever you wanted to your ride. Not anymore . . .a sad day indeed. Way better gas mileage but the extra $$$ you have to spend on all of the new parts would easily pay for gas anyways. I could go on but I do miss the good old days of emission free cars.

Thanks again.

No problem and I hear yuh, - ain't that the truth!

Something else you should know changing those. You HAVE TO use Ford only gaskets on your model if you don't want to take the chance having to do it all over again. So many revisions on those gaskets, third party didn't keep up with them all. (EDIT: Make sure you give the dealer ALL the vehicle info correctly. Ford changed around gasket locator pins in these models with the wind, so they may ask you for a VIN or production date verification for the right gaskets). This just has to be done with the intake gaskets since they were so problematic in the past.

Also the heads and gasket must be spotless, not even a finger print. Before laying that gasket down, hit the heads with lacquer thinner (medium vap).

Torque the manifold down in stages evenly, borrow a torque ratchet if you don't have one. You don't want to be chasing leaks as they can be real difficult to see. This job has to be fairly precise.

BTW- You should change the O-Rings in the heater core hard line at the water pump stem since you have the manifold off.. They tend to go out on yuh and leak and it usually happens a short time after a manifold job lol.. When that happens, you have to remove the manifold all over again. Best to do that now so you don't have to revisit later.

Mahalo for the information, great sight with knowledgable people.

The FSM does not mention most of things you said so I am glad that you warned me about the gaskets and the water pump. I will check on them later.

I got a torque wrench and other tools I collected over the years. I used to wrench on cars but retired about 22 years ago from the field. So much electronics now that I am going to start looking for classic cars and just buy them instead. I am from the days of the 1/4 mile. None of that Nascar BS which only goes around in circles. I watched this lady smoke a Camaro in her Gremlim, she went on to win it all. Now most of the tracks have or are getting torn down for development in California. I miss the days of smash up derby where you would buy a cheap *** clunker and just crash into each other. I used a mattress on the drivers side of the car to protect me from impact on that side. LOL. Good Bye Saugus Speedway and many others. Good times, Good times.

Now I hang in Hawaii, the jungle is awesome and the beaches are so clear that you can see so far in front of you. We go cliff diving, diving and surf for fun now.

Thanks again.

No problem.

I remember those fast Gremlin's. Well just one in particular lol. Also recall the Buick V6 being nice engine to put in just about anything.

If you PM me you e-mail, I can send you the remove and replace procedure for the manifold from Service. But send it privately, not here. I can send in a .doc file.

Dang, sounds like you retired in a nice spot.
