key went out
So I'm new to the whole coded key thing, I was drivin a 90 model nissan. Now I'm to an 03 screw. Well today I jump in try to crank it and it want turn over. My question is, is it the actual key or the remote. And can it be fixed or do I HAVE to order another key
Well I went and got my spare key and its doiong the samething..... The theft lift blinks really fast when the key is on.... I need help bad bc my trucks in a random parkin lot
If it will cranks over but not start, yes it's a PATS problem, Your theft light should be flashing rapidly when this happens. If the engine doesn't crank at all it's not the antitheft PATS system causing your problem.
What usually goes wrong is not the key going bad itself, if it's the original factory key. I've only seen a few aftermarket keys go bad and that is still vary rare.
Most of the time it's a wire comming from the antenna wire that runs up into the steering colum from the instrument cluster to the key switch.
Also could be that the instrumentation cluster has gone bad, that is where the chip for the PATS module is. For an F150 you can't just replace the PATS module, it is built into the instrument cluster circuit. In this case the whole instrument cluster has to be changed and reprogrammed by the dealership.

Try This...
Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode To enter the Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode, depress and hold the instrument cluster SELECT/RESET button and then turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Continue holding the SELECT/RESET button (five seconds) until tESt is displayed in the odometer. The SELECT/RESET button must be released within three seconds of the displaying of "tESt" to begin the dealer test mode. Depress the SELECT/RESET button to advance through the following steps until dtc is displayed. Depressing the SELECT/RESET button will display any continuous DTCs stored. Take note of which DTC codes are displayed.
You should get one of these codes for the PATS system;
9213 Anti-Theft Number of Programmed Keys is Below Minimum
A103 Antenna Not Connected / Defective Transceiver
9317 Battery Voltage High
9318 Battery Voltage Low
9342 ECU Is Defective
9356 Ignition RUN Circuit Open
9364 Ignition START Circuit Open
9600 PATS Transponder Signal Is Not Received / Damaged Key or Non-PATS Key
9601 PATS Received Incorrect Key-Code From Ignition Key Transponder (Unprogrammed Encoded Ignition Key)9602 PATS Received Invalid Format Of Key-Code From Ignition Key Transponder (Partial Key Read)
9681 PATS Transceiver Signal Is Not Received (Not Connected, Damaged, or Wiring)
A103 Antenna Not Connected Ä Defective Transceiver

It could also be a wiring/relay problem with the pcm. Plug a code ready into the obd2 port while the theft light is blinking fast. If the code reader can't connect to the pcm, you have a wiring/relay/pcm problem not a pats problem.

I'm going to be offline for a while so I will post all I know here. After you do all that clouseau has mentioned, if you don't get any codes it may be a pcm problem as stated above. I had a similar problem with an '02 screw. Theft light blinks, engine turns over but won't start, etc. It ended up being a bad pcm relay. After you get all the diagnostic codes, try switching the pcm relay with another relay of the same type. If the truck starts, lucky you if not the fun continues. You might have a wiring problem or pcm problem(unlikely). If you rule out a PATS issue, this seems to be where to look next. Wow, hope all that makes sense.
