Jumpy speedometer, clicking transmission 4R100

Both have e4od pans, one just has a deeper pan is all. E4od and 4r100 trannys are virtually identical. Except the bolt pattern on the pan is different. Same pan shape, just different bolt patterns even though they both use 20. Dunno why ford did this. Also the 4r100 used a couple more sensors, as i dont see them in the pics.

outlaw,
I wonder if there is another way to confirm this E40D tranny. When I bought speed sensor, the repair book I bought says the sensor is in the trany, however i found mine mounted on the transfer case. could it be that 4R100 has speed sensor on tranny and E40D does not have one?
I will look for more numbers on the tranny. At least the they appear to match both E40D.
Anyone out there recognize the knock? I was hoping for some previous experience with this noise.
For this week, I'm booked with camping activities, but hope to start pulling the transmission next week or I wil be taking it in to the dealer. either way I will eventually post what happened for closure of this thread.
thanks again.

The first year for the 4R100 was 1999. The last year of the E4OD was 1998.
The 4R100 is a beefed up E4OD with two additional sensors and different bolt spacing in the pan. There are a few other changes, but those are the major ones.
So if u actually do do have a 4r100, which i dont think u do, its the wrong tranny.

Also, there should be tags on the tranny that tell u exactly what it is. If not then chances are the mechanic or scrap yard took them off before selling it to u in hopes to pass it off as the one u wanted because they didnt have the trans u needed just to make a buck

Thanks outlaw,
Indeed you are correct, it is a E4OD transmission. I reviewed reciept from junkyard and that is what they sold me. I called about warranty on the tranny since it has not been 3 months yet, in a nutshell they told me to take it to certified tranny shop that will diagnose the tranny as a failure in order to warranty.
I took the truck to a reputable shade tree mechanic. His opionion is that it is not the flywheel making the noise but the torque converter. He feels that the tranny is ok but I should replace TC asap with oil/filter change. He wants $150 for labor plus cost of TC/filter/oil. so guessing bout $400 (autozone prices) total.
His explanation to me:
The failing TC is not providing enough pressure to the trany hence the odd shifting during light acceleration and normal shifting if you accelerate fast. the oil is clean and "new smelling" so TC should be all i need to replace. the clicking at low RPM/shift is the loose clutch parts in the TC.
anyways camping this the rest of the week and might let him replace the TC for chance of a "quick fix".
reputable tranny shop quoted me 3100 to R/R rebuilt tranny.
kinda nervous as to why the TC failed and replacing without knowing.
any thoughts?
