Default Are jack stands necessary?

I am replacing the transfer case motor on my '97 4x4 and I was wondering if it is necessary to jack the truck up to do this? I can get under there and reach the part just fine. Just wondering if there was any other reason. Doesn't seem like there would be.

You answered your own question. No stand needed just make sure you block the tires to keep the truck from rolling.

I've done U-joints with the truck on the ground and everything, it just makes it easier to do the work if the vehicles is on stands, NO you should not need jack stands (but keep in mind you need to jack the old case out and the new case up, make sure it will clear)

I personally would suggest using ramps or stands just for the sake of making it easier.

Good Luck!

Awesome. Thanks for the quick replies.

And it isn't the whole case, just the motor.

I have another question about a rogue wire that is sticking out of the case, but I'll start another thread for it.

Locking the truck up on stands makes it stable to work on.

Myself, i prefer to be a little bit safer. I use as many concrete blocks as i have to to make sure I have enough room and keep my valuable a** the way it is.

I would use jack stands over concrete blocks any day, I know someone that got crushed to death that way
