Idiot mechanic!

The altenator was ruined and the guy manned up and replaced it at no cost to me. I failed to mention I was also having my tires balance and rotated, plus it was 40 degrees outside and pouring rain, added to the fact I have no garage to work in so yeh I let someone else touch my truck.

mechanics are people too, and being such some are better than others and all of 'em make mistakes. where the rubber meets the road however, is how they handle it when they screw up. It sounds like you may have a better than average one in that regard here.

I realize that not everyone has the mechanical aptitude to do some or all of the work that needs to be done to maintain a vehicle, and unfortunately most of those people also don't realize when something is done wrong.
I used to manage the maintenance of a small fleet and seen all kinds of stupidity and that's just what made it out the garage door. We dealt with dealerships and larger garages. I'm not sure which was worse.
If you do need to use the services of a mechanic, I would do your research and talk to friend, neighbours, etc. to find out who they trust. At least you'll have somewhere to start.

I wasn't defending the mechanic in question specifically, just making the statement that sh*t happens to the best of wrench benders and no one came into this world as an expert in anything other than eating, sleeping, screaming and pooping. And some of us even had trouble with that!
As for the sensitve electronics, if they screw up and it's evident that it was as a result of the alternator getting soused with coolant the mech should pony up the bucks to resolve that too.
It doesnt say much for our precious blue oval however if it gets fried by an alternator going south for whatever reason. I agree there is a potential, but there is a potential for the spark plugs to blow out of the head or refuse to come out
.
For those of us who have the desire and whatever level of ability to repair or modify our own trucks, we are free to do so ourselves thanks to the freedoms the gov't hasn't taken away from us yet that were won by and preserved for us by our service people. but thats another discussion.
The mechanic in question made a mistake, and so far has resolved the issue to his customers satisfaction. Whether or not he is a decent mechanic or just a real putz with a wrench in his hand, I think is beyond the scope of this particular thread
