Default High Mileage/

I am starting to look for a new truck, and my max price is 4 grand. I have been seeing a ton of these trucks for sale lately and was wondering if high miles are detrimental to these trucks? The only decent looking ones that I can find have almost or at least 200k on them. Do the 4.6 and 5.4 tend to make it much longer than that?

Any used vehicle is a risk. 200k for any gasoline vehicle is high mileage with higher risk. Maintenance is a big factor to look at.

Take it to a mechanic if you are unsure.

If it's been driven by an old man, never off roaded, had a pro do all the work and maintenance on it and it's been babied, they can go well over 200,000 miles. If it's been owned by a young kid that plays with it and beats it up,it probably won't make it far without some money being put in it. I think what you should do is save up your cash and buy a lower mileage truck, the money you save now will just go into repairs later. Or,you could look hard. When I was looking for a truck I found a single cab flareside 4x4 with like 136,000 miles,5.4 triton and it had some mods done to it,he was wanting $5,500. The only reason I didn't go look at the truck is because I really wanted a supercrew or an extended cab. Trucks where I live ARE EXPENSIVE! $5,500 was a great price for here.

There's usually "one last thing wrong" on a vehicle before the previous owner wants to get rid of it. Could be something simple, or a wear and tear item - even tires (some do not want to fork over $800 for a new set of rubber!). If this is not the case, the owner will have all service records for the past couple of years. If you're mechanically savvy, arrive with a code reader, and check for pending codes, on top of the obvious items to look at. Properly maintained, these engine can go 250K miles plus - as I've seen on some Expeditions as well - and only a wreck ended the mileage run!
