Help overheating and no heat

Ok so I recently bought a 2000 f150 with the 5.4 so a couple days after I bought it the heat turned cold temp spiked I pulled over the temp dropped back down to normal I shut the truck off looked under it and there was a puddle of coolant a buddy came out and looked it over and we decided the thermostat was stuck shut so we pulled it out I drove home.
Then I took it to my mechanic he said my intake manifold was leaking so I changed that and put in a new thermostat and somewhat flushed the coolant didn't overheat again but had little to no heat.
Then yesterday I drove across town on my hour long lunch break to my house the truck sat 45 mins I decided to check the coolant before I headed back to work since I figured it was cooled off I popped the hood opened the coolant tank and some bubbled out I guess it wasn't cooled off still had plenty I thought so I drove it back across town to work flipped on the heater and in under a block the temp went all the way up then just dropped back to normal wasn't blowing out hot air either after work I added more coolant and then it was fine minus no heat.
So any ideas on what the problem is its not smoking white the coolant isn't bubbling when its running so I don't think its a head gasket although I can smell antifreeze I'm not sure if its just what spilled out burning off or what

It sounds like you are not getting good circulation in your cooling system. First check the water pump. Press the top radiator hose with engine running. Release hose and hose should regain it's shape quickly and there should be a rush of water. There could be obstructions in the engine that prevent the flow of coolant to the heater core. The radiator hoses should be hot. You could also disconnect the outlet heater hose at the heater core (at the firewall left side). Start your engine and observe flow of coolant out of the heater core.
The heater hose have quick disconnects. You press in the tabs on the inner retainer and pull the hose off the fitting. If you are pressing the correct tabs, the hose comes off easily. To reinstall, assembly the inner piece to the outer piece, put a little oil on the heater core inlet and outlet ports, push on the heater hose. See attached for picture of quick disconnect.

It sounds like you are not getting good circulation in your cooling system. First check the water pump. Press the top radiator hose with engine running. I think that's probly what it is today after work the truck was at normal running temp but started running kinda crappy I felt all the hoses bottom radiator was the only one warm
Take it to a shop or go to harbor freight and pick up a cooling system pressure tester, on a side note, if the heater is not on when you top off the cooling system it does not fill up with liquid leaving an air pocket in the system, after it burps out the level drops and you start all over again-hope this helps.
