Head vs engine block fit
WILL A 5.4 HEAD FIT ON A 4.6 BLOCK?????
First off, I am not a mechanic! But as we all do, I am experiencing mechanical difficulties.
So here's the issue, I have a 1998 Ford F-150, 2WD, who I am the 3rd,4th or 5th owner of, who knows!?!
Engine compartment stickers read 4.6 and according to the dealership and VIN# this truck should have a 4.6 single overhead cam Windsor. My dilemma is, I bought a timing chain kit for a 4.6 and of course it doesn't fit. The head on this thing is stamped 5.4L, hence the question, WILL A 5.4 HEAD FIT ON A 4.6 BLOCK????? I can't find the engine tag so I don't know what the block is. I need to determine weather I have a 5.4 complete engine or if I have a 5.4 head on a 4.6 block (?POSSIBLE?) in order to buy the correct timing kit for it. I am open to all suggestions including blowing the entire truck to SMITHERINES!
Thank You
Oh, the timing kit I bought for a 4.6 has slots on the sprockets/gears which looks like they slide on and maybe lock on with a nut and key. The sprockets/gears that r already in the truck, look as if they r pressed on.

There is no difference between 5.4 and 4.6 Windsor heads, They are the same head. The chains are all the same, it's the guides that have been upgraded. The Tensioners are also changed to the better design. Are you sure on the guides, that you are not just missing the plastics on the metal guides, The new desiign is plastic/teflon style. They are much quieter over the original ones. I have a 98 5.4 that is getting the upgraded chains next week put on. I have the kit sitting, just waiting for the correct time and place to do it.
