Default Ground wire to firewall is glowing

I replaced my starter today and when I hooked up my battery it started sparking real bad and the ground wire from the engine to the firewall started glowing red and almost caught fire. What's going on?...and did I cause any other damage?

You've got a short somewhere. My guess is somewhere by the starter.. If it got hot enough to turn red, I'd be checking things out really well. You got it hot enough to melt sheathing off of cables too.

Sounds like you have the battery wire to the starter grounded out.

Yep, sounds like positive went to ground with the hookup. Hope the starter is ok.
