Ford designed and built an F150 that gets 60 MPG in the city.
It is a hydraulic hybrid.
They have had it for over three years now and not another word about it since word leaked out.
Looks like the "Model T switch from ethanol to gasoline after the weekend retreat between Rockefeller (Standard Oil - now Exxon) and Henry Ford" - all over again.
"2008 The standard F-150 has a curb weight of about 4800 lbs., which is 65% greater than theToyota Prius, yet incredibly the Hydraulic F-150 with a continuously variable transmission matches the Prius with 60mpg city rating, that’s an amazing 400% increase over its gasoline version. The Hydraulic F-150 is currently scheduled for launch in August of 2008 "
That's one F 150 we will never see. Why? It would probably get about 130 MPG in a smaller car after people demanded it, and that would mean 75%+ less gas use, and profits for big oil and less payoff for the automakers.
The 350 MPG car did exist in the 70's, it is not a myth.
I have no doubt the automakers are playing games with big oil $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
