Gotts Mod- WOW...
Not a big deal for some but here are some real numbers for this mod. I drive an average of 100-150 miles per day for work in my truck and it is a good mix of highway and city driving. I drive a 2001 F-150 SCrew with the 5.4L. I have tracked mileage over the years very closely as a change in mileage can be an indicator of problems. This truck has averaged 15.6-16.2 mpg for as long as I have had it. Cooler weather without the A/C running bumps the number and hot weather with the A/C on drops it but overall I can say that a mid-15 mpg number is the best all around figure. 11 years and 142,000 miles is the basis for that determination.
Did the Gotts mod a month ago because I was bored. LOL Didn't really expect much due to such an realtively insignificant change but I monitored the mileage closely after the change. I am very happy to report that after 4 tanks of fuel my average mpg is around 17.3! I had 19.4 on one tank that was mostly highway driving. I've never gotten numbers like this. I find it interesting that a simple change produced these numbers and am waiting for the drop off if it happens. But for now, it seems legit. I can't feel any real changes in the power of the truck and have yet to tow my boat with it but that is coming. I'll report after a 2,000 mile trip to Florida I have scheduled in the next 3 weeks. But for now, an investment of $9 is paying off pretty well. If the numbers hold I'll save 1 gallon of fuel each fill up. At $3.50 a gallon I'll pay for the mod in 2 1/2 tanks and then each fill is profit. LOL

Did the gotts mod and removed intake silencer and put in and k&n. i never really noticed a difference exept it seems to rev a little higher and hold the gear a little longer at WOT, but that may just be me. No mpg gains for me, lucky guy....
best ways to increase mpg:
low compression with turbo
skinner lighter tires/rims
lean the tune, makes more power and better mpg
weight reduction
coast as much as possibile and shut engine off at red lights
warm air atomizes better so warm air intake
better injector technology so the fuel can be burn more efficient. the spray pattern on new injectors is alot better.
new bearings and lubes
and you still wouldnt see a 5mpg difference in same driving conditions. so that mod is prolly a plecebo or not true. and i have the same info backing up my data. but i apply common knowledge
if you show me conclusive data proving you got 4mpg better with a mod please share it. anyone can write something and say they had good results but if you take your time and show me the data or the research i might believe you.
until then this is just a wives tale.....just like "dont swim after you eat"

best ways to increase mpg:
low compression with turbo
if you can stay out of the throttle
skinner lighter tires/rims
Correct!
lean the tune, makes more power and better mpg
False, actually hinders power but makes the engine starve for fuel.
weight reduction
Correct!
coast as much as possibile and shut engine off at red lights
shutting off is only beneficial for extended idling times.
warm air atomizes better so warm air intake
actually cold air makes more power, and helps effieciency.

i just looked up the gotts mod. no way you have a 4mpg increase. you probally messed up the math somewhere
gotts mod: is getting rid of the factory snorkel in front of the filter and replacing it with a slightly bigger one.
hes what i think: it probally sounds better and will not increase hp/tq. if ford engineers put it on there its for a reason. if it effected the mpg by 5mpg the engineers would never put it there even if it was quieter. if you show me a dyno where trhe engine was at same temps and all parts were same temp and you have increased mpg and hp/tq that would be different. sounds immpossible to me but you never know
generally cooler air is harder to atomize. and warmer air is easier to mix with fuel thus being more efficient. cooler air does make more power but looses mpg.
i am on a few online mpg forums and i have done my research.
