Default Fuel Sender

I have now had two fuel pumps replaced over the ten years I've owned this old gas hog and the fuel gauge does not work as it should.

It does work, when it wants to, but when I fuel up it seems to take hours, or a few start-up/shut-downs to make the gauge rise to match the amount of fuel put in the tank.

Any ideas?

Assuming we are talking about the 2001 in your signature, you can use the dealer test mode that is incorporated into your instrument cluster. This will tell you if it is the gauge, or if you need to look elsewhere. I have this saved in a Word doc.... It will give you the readings and how, in conjunction, your gauge should read.

I should mention that how you activate the DTM is by having the truck off, and holding in the button for the cluster while you start the truck..... just hold it until it says GAGE.

At least, that's how mine works on my Escape.

I should have mentioned that in my post, I did put it in dealer mode already. The fuel levels are represented as they should be from the sender...

So that means the cluster is bad?

Most likely a wornout fuel gauge. You can repair it, as there are a few write ups on YouTube. There are a number of places that do repairs to these.

This ^^^

Unless you may have put an overlay on your cluster.... sometimes when people put overlays on they come in contact with the needle and keep it from moving.

Been there, done that on my old Explorer.

No overlay... I have an extra cluster laying around. I'll start there, thanks!
